Libyan ambassador ordered out of U.K.

LONDON, May 3 (UPI) -- Libya's ambassador to Britain is under orders to leave the country, a top government official said.

Foreign Secretary William Hague said he decided to remove the Libyan ambassador after angry mobs stormed the British Embassy in Tripoli Monday, Britain's The Sun reported.

"I take the failure to protect such premises very seriously indeed," Hague said explaining why he gave Omar Jelban 24 hours to leave Britain.

Hague said the Gadhafi regime breached its international responsibilities by allowing the embassy to be attacked.

The storming of the embassy came as crowds gathered in Tripoli for the funeral of Gadhafi's son and three grandchildren who were killed in a NATO airstrike Saturday.

Their deaths triggered reprisal attacks on the British and Italian embassies as well as the U.S. Diplomatic Mission.
