Fighting at Libya-Tunisia border ongoing

DEHIBA, Tunisia, April 29 (UPI) -- A U.N. agency said Friday it is concerned for people fleeing Libya as government and opposition forces fight for control at a border crossing with Tunisia.

"Before the fighting intensified on Thursday, there were long lines of vehicles packed with families queuing up at the border crossing to cross into southern Tunisia," Melissa Fleming, a spokeswoman for the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said.

The large number of recent arrivals is straining the limited resources at the border region of southeastern Tunisia, Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reported Friday.

More than 30,000 refugees have flooded across the border since fighting intensified about three weeks ago, Britain's The Guardian reported.

Meanwhile, Tunisian troops have captured Libyan government forces after the Libyans crossed the border in pursuit of rebel fighters, the BBC said.

Libyan forces in about 15 vehicles entered the town of Dehiba before being overpowered by Tunisian troops and surrendering their weapons.

Tunisia has strongly condemned the violation of its territory.

"Given the gravity of what has happened, the Tunisian authorities have informed the Libyans of their extreme indignation and demand measures to put an immediate stop to these violations," the Tunisian Foreign Ministry said.
