BEERSHEVA, Israel, April 17 (UPI) -- An Israeli teenager wounded earlier this month when a missile from Gaza hit a school bus died Sunday, hospital officials said.

Daniel Viflic, 16, died in the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva, Haaretz reported.

"Sadly, Daniel passed away this afternoon," said Shaul Sofer, head of the intensive care unit. "It wasn't a surprise for us. He arrived in critical condition and shortly afterward his brain stopped functioning. Due to the sensitive nature of the event, we continued treatments despite knowing that he had no chance of recovery."

The missile hit the bus near Kibbutz Sa'ad in southern Israel April 7, right after it dropped off other schoolchildren. The driver was wounded by shrapnel in his leg.

"Daniel fought but passed away calmly. I am positive he is in a good place now," said his father Yitzhak, who thanked the doctors.

Cross-border attacks between Gaza and Israel have escalated since the attack.
