Police detain more than 100 protesters

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, April 1 (UPI) -- More than 100 protesters at an unsanctioned rally in St. Petersburg, Russia, were arrested and held by police, a law enforcement spokesman said Friday.

Among the protesters arrested was Solidarity movement co-leader Boris Nemtsov, who was a deputy prime minister under Russian President Boris Yeltsin, RIA Novosti reported.

Of the estimated 300 people attending the rally Thursday, 112 were arrested, police said.

Demonstrators were gathered for so-called Strategy 31 marches that come on the last day of every month that has 31 days. The marches are in reference to Article 31 of Russia's constitution that allows peaceful demonstrations.

Police halted the demonstration when marchers tried to walk along the main street of St. Petersburg.
