Violence continues in Russian republic

NALCHIK, Russia, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Rebels staged attacks Friday on several law enforcement buildings in Nalchik in Russia's North Caucasus, officials said.

The insurgents, traveling in small groups in cars, hit the local headquarters of the Federal Security Service or FSB with four grenades sent from a launcher. Two traffic police stations in the capital of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic were bombed, as well. An FSB health resort may also have been attacked.

At least one person was injured, police said.

On Thursday, a standoff between government forces and rebels ended, Interfax said. The troops surrounded a rebel hideout Tuesday.

Between seven and 10 rebels believed to be in the area broke through the cordon and escaped.

Last week, three tourists from Moscow were killed in an attack on their car in the republic and a ski lift near Mount Elbrus was bombed. Kabardino-Balkaria was temporarily closed to tourists Tuesday.

Kabardino-Balkaria, with a population of less than 1 million, is a popular tourist destination, especially for skiing and climbing. Mount Elbrus is the highest peak in Europe.
