Pakistan earthquake damages 200 homes

QUETTA, Pakistan, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- About 200 mud-walled houses were damaged by the magnitude 7.2 earthquake in southwestern Pakistan, officials said Wednesday.

Ahmed Kamal of the National Disaster Management Authority told CNN there were no reports of death or injury. Hundreds of tents, blankets and meals were sent to the area.

But an official at Quetta's Civil Hospital said a female cardiac patient suffered a fatal heart attack during the tremor.

The earthquake struck at 1:23 a.m. Wednesday Pakistan time at a depth of 52 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Arif Mahmood, director of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, put the epicenter at 200 miles southwest of Quetta near Kharan, Balochistan.

It was felt all over Pakistan as well as India and Iran, and even by people who posted on Twitter from the Persian Gulf.

The United States, China and Australia have offered aid to Pakistan, but it is not needed, Kamal said.

"Things in the headquarters started shaking and books fell off the desks," Balochistan Police Inspector Sultan Mehmood told CNN. "We left the headquarters running into the streets -- scared for our lives."
