REGINA, Saskatchewan, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- A Canadian couple experienced a close call with a train Saturday when their car got mired in ruts on snow-covered train tracks at a crossing, police said.
Police in Regina, Saskatchewan, said the man and woman got out of their car before the train hit it about 2:36 a.m. CST, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
The train's engineer put on the emergency brake but the locomotive was "chugging down the track," couldn't stop in time and smashed the car, police Staff Sgt. Corey Zaharuk told the CBC.
"[The driver] was with his girlfriend, driving her home from work," Zaharuk said. "When he approached the rail tracks at Thirteenth Avenue, the car got hung up on the ruts from the snow and ice near and on the tracks.
"There was no derailment nor any injuries or apparent damage to the train or rail line."
The car was towed away, the crossing cleared and the accident was being investigated, Zaharuk said.
