1 Palestinian killed in border incident

GAZA, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- One man was killed Tuesday night when Israeli troops opened fire on several Palestinians as they approached the Gaza border fence, the Israeli military said.

The military said it suspected the group was a cell trying to plant explosive devices along the border, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Two Palestinians died in a similar incident Sunday.

Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, chief of general staff, said Monday the Israeli military "holds the Hamas terrorist organization solely responsible for any terrorist activity emanating from the Gaza Strip," the Post said.

"We hope that the security situation in the south does not deteriorate, however the [military] is preparing for any scenario," he added during a meeting with Italian Gen. Vincenzio Camporini at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv.
