Volcano eruptions continue in Indonesia

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Mount Merapi spewed more gas and lava in Indonesia Sunday, and the death toll rose to at least 156, officials said.

At least two large pyroclastic flows -- fast-moving bursts of extremely hot gas and rock fragments -- were seen on the central Java volcano's southern side in the afternoon, CNN reported.

Clouds of gas and dust in the sky forced flight cancellations into and out of Yogyakarta. Explosions from the volcano could be heard near the city, the report said.

Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency expanded the danger zone to 12 miles after Friday's deadly eruptions, when villages that had been thought safe were hit.

At least 156 people have died since Merapi began erupting Oct. 26, a doctor at Sardjito hospital said.

Relief organizations estimate about 200,000 people have been displaced.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was in Yogyakarta on Sunday with several of his ministers to oversee relief efforts.
