U.N. peacekeeping aide kidnapped in Darfur

EL FASHER, Sudan, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A United Nations worker was kidnapped in Sudan's Darfur region just after a Security Council mission arrived, a U.N. spokesman said Friday.

The victim, whose name and nationality had not yet been released, was taken Thursday night in El Fasher, capital of the region, The Christian Science Monitor reported.

"Armed men entered the residence of four civilian staff members in downtown El Fasher. They tied up two of them and made away with the other two in a vehicle. One man escaped and the other is still missing," a U.N. mission spokesman told Russia's RTT News.

Several foreigners have been kidnapped in Darfur since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for President Omar al-Bashir for war crimes, but the abductions probably have been motivated by money, the BBC reported.

The U.N. delegation was greeted in El Fasher by protesters supporting Bashir, who nearly prevented the group from leaving the airport, the Sudan Tribune reported.

There are 1,000 foreign peacekeepers based in El Fasher, but only 600 of them live on a military base. After the abduction, U.N. officials said they expect to move more of them to the base, where security is better.
