Ulster bombing called 'futile'

BIRMINGHAM, England, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- A Northern Ireland official has called Monday night's car bombing in Londonderry a failed attempt to destroy the peace process.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness told Sky News he was disgusted by the attack that damaged several business properties including the Ulster Bank and nearby Da Vinci's hotel and restaurant complex.

No one was injured because police received a warning about the bomb and evacuated the area.

"We have seen over the course of recent times that there is still a tiny minority of people who believe that this sort of activity will advance their objectives," McGuinness said.

He told the BBC "the objectives of these conflict junkies are to destroy the peace process."

"It is quite clear their objectives cannot be advance and these deeds are totally futile," he added.

McGuinness made the comments in England Tuesday where he is attending the Conservative Party conference.
