Pakistan to support Afghan peace efforts

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 11 (UPI) -- Pakistan will continue to support the peace efforts of the Afghan government, a Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman said.

Referring to last week's peace jirga in Kabul, spokesman Abdul Basit said the meeting's outcome should be considered at the international conference to be held July 20 in Kabul, Pakistan's Daily Times reported Friday.

The jirga, or peace council, attended by more than 1,500 delegates, was called to discuss efforts by Afghan President Hamid Karzai's government to reintegrate Taliban militants willing to give up violence and respect the constitution.

"The peace jirga … has come up with a broad range of recommendations," Basit said. "The outcome of the peace jirga, in our view, should be given due consideration at the Kabul conference."
