WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- U.S. congressional leaders gathered Wednesday in the Capitol to celebrate Winston Churchill and listen to a short concert by Roger Daltrey of The Who.
The occasion was the dedication of a bust of the World War II British prime minister in Statuary Hall, The Washington Post reported.
Daltrey and his backup musicians performed Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," a song he selected as a tribute to the relationship between Britain and the United States. Later, after a number of speeches, he did "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who.
The speakers included House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, who arranged for the Churchill bust two years ago, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who reminisced about having dinner in Las Vegas with Churchill's grandson, The Guardian reported.
Only Secretary of State John Kerry was tactless enough to mention the British burning of the Capitol during the War of 1812.
"To think that in Statuary Hall, the building that British troops tried to burn down, the bust of the onetime secretary of state for the colonies will forever stand alongside the statue of Samuel Adams," Kerry said.
