Financier Stanford to be returned to jail

HOUSTON, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. authorities say they expect jailed financier R. Allen Stanford to be returned to his cell after he was hospitalized for a fight.

U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Alfredo Perez said Saturday that Stanford, who has been denied bail after being charged with orchestrating a $7 billion Ponzi scheme, would be returned to his cell Sunday or Monday, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Perez released few details of the altercation that landed Stanford in the hospital last week, except to say he fought with another inmate at the Conroe, Texas, detention center. He reportedly added that Sanford's wounds were "superficial," such as bruising, and that he was not stabbed or seriously hurt.

Kent Schaffer, Stanford's court-appointed attorney, said authorities hadn't told him why the two men were fighting, but did tell the Chronicle that a doctor who wanted to conduct an MRI on the 59-year-old Stanford was concerned that a metal stint he has might interfere with the test.

Stanford, founder of Stanford Financial Group of Houston, faces conspiracy, bribery and obstruction of justice charges.
