Court rejects farm market crash review

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The California Supreme Court Thursday refused to review the conviction of a motorist who killed 10 people at the Santa Monica farmer's market in 2003.

The refusal means the conviction of George Weller, who was 83 at the time and now resides in a nursing home, will stand.

The reason for the denial was not stated.

Weller was convicted of 10 counts of vehicular manslaughter after plowing his car through the barricades at the busy street market. Two children were among those killed and 63 people were hurt.

The Los Angeles Times said it was one of the worst pedestrian traffic accident in U.S. history and cost the city of Santa Monica $21 million in legal settlements.

Weller was sentenced to five years probation after being convicted.
