IDF: No charges in friendly fire events

JERUSALEM, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Israel's military Sunday blamed four friendly fire incidents in January's Gaza operation on operational errors, so no one involved will face charges.

Ynetnews.com reported the Israel army completed its inquiries into the incidents that claimed four soldiers' lives and left 30 wounded.

The military's report pertained to events on Jan. 5 during fighting against Palestinian forces as part of Operation Cast Lead. A senior army officer said the field conditions of the situation were complex, particularly since the combat took place in urban areas.

"This was a long campaign that had many achievements. Mistakes happen, which is why the (army) conducts these inquests, so the lessons would be learned in full," the official said.

Thirteen Israelis and about 1,400 Palestinians were killed during the Israeli incursion, the Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia.org says.
