Two 15-year-olds charged with murder

NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Two New Orleans teenagers have been charged with first-degree murder and robbery in the slaying of French Quarter bartender Wendy Byrne, a police official says.

Police Superintendent Warren Riley said the 15-year-olds turned themselves in at the urging of their mothers who noticed their sons resembled the suspects sketched by a police artist, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Wednesday.

A third suspect in the case, also 15, was being sought by police.

Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro says the case will go to juvenile court while his office decides whether to prosecute the boys as adults or leave the case in the juvenile system.

Bartender Wendy Byrne, 39, was fatally shot Saturday night while she was walking with an acquaintance in the lower French Quarter.
