Dog abuser gets 30 weekend jail days

CALGARY, Alberta, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- A Canadian man convicted of trying to euthanize his injured dog by dragging it behind a car in Alberta was given a sentence of 30 weekend days in jail.

Daniel Haskett, 21, pleaded guilty to the botched attempt to kill his Lab-collie named Daisy in October 2006 after a teenage friend accidentally ran over and injured the dog, the Calgary Herald reported.

Court in Didsbury, 50 miles north of Calgary, heard testimony that Haskett tied a rope around the injured dog's neck, taped its mouth and legs, placed a plastic bag over its head and then dragged it behind a car.

The dog was left barely alive on a street, and a veterinarian later euthanized it.

The teenager who assisted has a juvenile criminal record and can't be identified. He has already been sentenced to probation for his role in the incident, the Edmonton Sun said.

After the sentencing Wednesday, defense lawyer Alan Pearse said his client has been harassed and threatened, the Herald said.

"It's been very hard on him, quite frankly," Pearce said. "He hopes people leave him alone, which is what he wants."
