Mom gets prison for gun in stroller

UTICA, N.Y., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A New York state woman who stored a sawed-off shotgun and other weapons in her baby's stroller has been sentenced to up to three years in prison.

Judge Michael Dwyer urged Stephanie Wilson, 29, of Utica to take advantage of mental health services in prison as he imposed the 1 1/2- to three-year sentence, the Utica Observer-Dispatch reported.

Mark Curley, a public defender, said after the hearing that Wilson is mentally ill and was not taking her medication when she was arrested in July. He said that she was afraid someone was trying to hurt her.

Wilson pulled out a knife and the shotgun when she got into an argument with another woman.

"She took responsibility for her actions, and she took responsibility for her failure to keep up with her medication," Curley said. "She recognizes she wasn't thinking clearly at the time, and she knows she really was putting herself and her kids in jeopardy, as well as other people."
