Flash flood kills two in Spain

VALENCIA, Spain, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A 47-year-old British woman and her 14-year-old daughter drowned when a flash flood occurred in Spain's Clariano River in Valencia province, officials say.

Spanish officials confirmed that the two unidentified victims were among a group of four women who were carried away by a flash flood, one of several this week in Spain's Mediterranean coast regions, the BBC said Friday.

While two of the women were able to escape the flood waters Thursday, the mother and her teenage daughter drowned.

The bodies of the two victims, who had been attempting to cross a ravine with the two other women when the flood struck, were found early Friday morning by emergency workers.

The deadly flood occurred as Spain is struggling to endure torrential rainfall and partial flooding, mostly in the eastern and southern parts of the country, the BBC said.

Roads and railway lines throughout Spain have been blocked by flood waters, while several Spanish ports have been closed as a precaution.
