NAIROBI, Kenya, July 18 (UPI) -- Police in Kenya are more corrupt than any other public institution in the nation, the Kenya Bribery Index indicates.
The index, released Thursday at the Kenyatta International Conference Center in Nairobi, Kenya, uses a scale of zero to 100 to rate the degree of institutional corruption described by members of the public, the Nation newspaper reported Friday.
Some 2,400 people were questioned in the survey conducted by Transparency International from April 25 to May 4.
Police department corruption was rated at an aggregate index of 57 percent, the survey indicates.
Ninety-three percent of those questioned said they had been faced with a bribery incident while interacting with Kenyan police.
"The perception is that little has so far changed. The only notable movement was towards the negative with a total perception (of corruption) increasing over the last four years," a index said.
Local authorities were second on the corruption list, and the Ministry of Lands was third, the Nation said.
