WINNIPEG, Manitoba, May 26 (UPI) -- Police say one woman is dead and two family members injured after another relative drove over them as they slept in the yard on a Canadian Indian reservation.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were called to the Berens River First Nation reservation, about 165 miles north of Winnipeg, Saturday around 5 p.m., the Winnipeg Sun reported Monday.
Bernice Buchie, 29, told the RCMP she mistakenly drove over her 43-year-old sister-in-law, her brother, 44, and his 24-year-old daughter, police said. Her unidentified sister-in-law was pronounced dead at the scene, the report said..
The injured were taken by helicopter to Winnipeg hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the RCMP said.
No explanation was given as to why the family was sleeping on the ground outside their home, nor why the car was driven through the yard.
Buchie was charged with one count of impaired driving causing death and two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, and released awaiting her first court appearance Aug. 12, the newspaper said.
