Report: Kenya peace deal in works

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Saturday a political solution to Kenya's violent crisis may be found within the week.

Annan reported "steady progress" in talks he is mediating between President Mwai Kibaki and rival Raila Odinga, leader of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement, the BBC reported.

Odinga has agreed to recognize Kibaki as winner of December's disputed election in return for a "broad-based government," another source close the talks told the BBC.

John Holmes, the U.N. emergency relief coordinator, Saturday stressed the urgency of reaching a peace deal after touring areas of violence in Kenya's Rift Valley.

More than 1,000 people have been killed since recent elections and this week, the United States announced travel bans for 10 business and political leaders, accusing them of fomenting violence, the BBC reported.
