Key events set direction for philanthropy

WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- A study on philanthropy released Thursday shows that donations to charities in the United States are usually motivated by a major life event.

The study by the Center in Philanthropy at Indiana University found the incidence of a "galvanizing event" to be a common theme among donors of all economic classes.

The Washington Post said that examples often include major disasters or personal tragedies, such as the death of a loved one from cancer or some other disease.

Other findings included the desire to leave a personal legacy, enhance business ties or "set an example" for the rest of the nation as the inspiration for major gifts to cultural, educational and international charities.
