NYC hires defense lawyer for fire probe

NEW YORK, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- The government of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg hired a criminal defense lawyer to represent the city in a probe of the fire at the Deutsche Bank building.

The Bloomberg administration hired criminal defense lawyer Gary Naftalis to represent city agencies in the criminal investigation into the Aug. 18 fire, which resulted in the deaths of two fire fighters, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

The hiring follows the subpoenaing of city documents and contractor's records related to the fire and the events leading up to it.

“The decision to retain counsel was prompted by the subpoenas that have been issued by the district attorney for voluminous documents, the need for the city to have sufficiently knowledgeable attorneys in order to advise it and appropriately and fully cooperate with the district attorney’s investigation, and the serious issues that have been raised about actions leading up to the fire,” the office of the city’s chief lawyer, Corporation Counsel Michael Cardozo, said in a statement.
