Popping sounds lead couple to sinkhole

EUSTIS, Fla., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- A Florida couple said a sound resembling golf balls pelting their house led them to a sinkhole that is starting to devour their home.

Jesse and Wilhelmina Campbell of Eustis said they followed the strange popping sounds and found cracks throughout their home, WKMG-TV in Orlando reported Monday.

"I heard a crack and it sounded like golf balls were hitting the house," Jesse Campbell said.

"We were standing there looking at all of the cracks and that is when the window just fell in," Wilhelmina Campbell said. "We had never heard of a house being in a sinkhole before. It is foreign to us. We are not from Florida."

The house was declared condemned Sunday and the couple said they are removing all of their possessions from the home.

The discovery of the sinkhole follows the opening of a 30-foot sinkhole beneath an Apopka home two weeks ago. The hole swallowed that house's kitchen and part of a bathroom.
