Russia to attend treaty talks

MOSCOW, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Russian officials said they would participate in next month's talks in Germany on the future of a treaty aimed at limiting troops and weapons in Europe.

An amended version of the 1990 treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe has yet to be signed by any NATO country, RIA Novosti reported Friday.

Russia has said it will withdraw from the treaty if NATO members continue to press for Russia's withdrawal of troops from Georgia and Moldova, a commitment made by Russian President Boris Yeltsin in 1999.

Russia considers much of the treaty outdated because it doesn't consider the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact or recent NATO expansion, RIA Novosti reported.

NATO's refusal to ratify the amended version of the pact has caused significant tension between Russia and NATO's western-member countries, RIA Novosti said.
