Auto show crash toll rises to six

MEMPHIS, June 17 (UPI) -- Two more people died Sunday, raising the death toll to six from an accident involving a drag racing car at a Tennessee charity event.

Four were reported dead Saturday night and another three were reported dead earlier Sunday -- but the Tennessee Highway Patrol revised that figure downward to two later in the day, The Memphis-Commercial Appeal reported.

The professional drag racer lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a crowd attending the Cars for Kids Auto, Truck, Cycle and Antique Tractor show, WHBQ-TV in Memphis reported. As many as 15 others were said to be injured in Saturday's accident.

One witness told sources the car began burning off its tires, then slammed into a light pole before spinning into the stands.

The driver, who was not identified, was reportedly a 20-year drag racing veteran. He was taken to an emergency room.

Cars for Kids works to raise money for children in need, the organization says on its Web site. As many as 60,000 people were expected to attend the event this weekend in Selmer, Tenn.
