One-third in U.S. think Bible is literal

WASHINGTON, May 30 (UPI) -- A Gallup poll of U.S. adults found that one-third of respondents said they believe the Bible is literally true.

The telephone poll of 3,010 U.S. adults, conducted during the month of May in 2005, 2006 and 2007, suggests that 31 percent of U.S. adults believe the Bible is the literal word of God while 47 percent said the Bible was "inspired by" the word of God and 19 percent said the book was a collection of "fables, legends, history, and moral precepts recorded by man."

The poll also found an inverse correlation between belief in a literal Bible and level of education. Of those who believe the Bible to be literally true, 42 percent were educated to a high school level or less, 32 percent had some college education, 20 percent were college graduates and 11 percent completed post-graduate work.

The poll had a sampling error of 2 percent.
