Israeli leader to face second rape count

TEL AVIV, Israel, April 1 (UPI) -- Suspended Israeli President Moshe Katsav will face a second rape count in the case of a Tourism Ministry employee who claims he attacked her.

The Israeli attorney general's office announced Sunday that the additional count would be added to the existing draft indictment against Katsav, the Jerusalem Post reported.

In the initial count, Katsav is alleged to have raped the woman, known as "Tourism Ministry A" in the ministry's offices. On Thursday, he was questioned by police at length regarding new allegations by the woman that he had also raped her at a Jerusalem hotel, the newspaper said.

Katsav is appealing to Attorney General Menahem Mazuz to reverse the decision to indict him.

Zion Amir, the suspended president's lawyer, said that "it is hard not to get the impression" that the decision to add the new charge was made before the Thursday interrogation. He questioned the believability of the alleged victim, saying this is the fourth time she has changed her testimony.

Mazuz said Katsav's attorneys may present evidence countering the new allegation at a hearing that has been set for May 2.
