Questions raised about Calderon claim

MEXICO CITY, March 23 (UPI) -- Relatives of Mexican President Felipe Calderon have disavowed his recent remarks about his family working in the United States, possibly illegally.

"I don't know of any relative that is or has been in the United States," said Luis Gabriel Calderon Hinojosa, a physician and the president's eldest brother. "There are more than 100 cousins, and we're all over the place. Maybe, by chance, there's someone on the other side."

Calderon's remarks came during U.S. President Bush's visit to Mexico, a meeting in which the leaders focused on immigration issues.

"I do have family in the United States, and what I can tell you is that these are people who work and respect that country," said Calderon earlier this month. "I have not seen them in a long time and do not know their migratory status."
