Lawsuit filed over deadly pet food

CHICAGO, March 21 (UPI) -- A Chicago woman is suing a Canadian-U.S. pet food maker over the death of her cat from eating food now under a continental recall.

Dawn Majerczyk filed an 8-page suit in U.S. District Court in Chicago claiming her 9-year-old cat had to be euthanized Saturday because of kidney failure that began just days after it ate one of the 91 brands the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recalled.

Majerczyk said she hoped to at least recover the $300 in veterinarian fees, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

The FDA said it was aware of at least 13 cats and a dog that died after eating Menu Foods products, said Stephen Sundlof, director of the agency's Center for Veterinary Medicine.

USA Today said investigators feel suspicion remains focused on a possible contamination of wheat gluten, used to thicken gravy in the cat and dog foods sold in pouches and cans.
