Missouri contract canceled over illegals

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., March 7 (UPI) -- Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt ordered a state contract with a cleaning company terminated after immigration officials found 25 employees were illegal immigrants.

At a Jefferson City news conference, Blunt said federal immigration officials had detained at least 25 of 80 employees of Sam's Janitorial Service, which is based in Oklahoma. More detentions were possible, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Blunt said a suspicious state employee triggered the investigation two months ago.

The company was contracted to clean nine state buildings housing employees of the secretary of state, state auditor, attorney general and education and social service departments in Jefferson City, Columbia and Kansas City.

Blunt said the nationalities of the illegal workers had not been released.

A spokeswoman for the company declined to comment to the Post-Dispatch.
