Britain releases confused terror suspects

BIRMINGHAM, England, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Two terror suspects released by British authorities Wednesday alleged they were given no reason for their arrest and week-long imprisonment.

The Times of London said the two former detainees immediately issued a statement through their lawyer alleging they were never informed of the charges against them.

The men were two of the nine terror suspects arrested last Wednesday on suspicion of planning to kidnap and behead a British Muslim soldier.

"Not a word was ever mentioned to either of them about a plot to kidnap or the grisly suggestion of a beheading or even of a soldier at all," attorney Gareth Peirce said in the statement.

"They are convinced that others in the police station must be as innocent as they and urge that they also be swiftly released," she added.

A West Midlands Police spokesman promptly defended the arrests and alleged they represented a normal aspect of police work.

"This is normal and to be expected in large, complex criminal inquiries where a number of arrests have taken place," he told the paper.
