U.N. chief calls Serbs to stand trial

THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday he hopes The Hague tribunal will put on trial all Serb war crimes suspects before it shuts down in 2010.

After meeting Judge Fausto Pocar, president of the U.N. tribunal in The Hague, Ban told reporters he is aware the judges and prosecutors are frustrated in efforts to conclude their work, because suspects are not available due to their countries' failure to arrest them, the Serbian news agency Beta reported.

Recalling the tribunal's deadline to complete its work in 2010, Ban said the U.N. Security Council will review and discuss the issue.

Ban also called on former Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic and his military chief, Ratko Mladic, sought on genocide and crime against humanity charges in the 1991-95 Yugoslav wars, to surrender to The Hague tribunal.
