U.K. sees rise in racially-motivated crime

LONDON, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Britain is experiencing a disturbing trend involving assault cases being treated differently depending on race, The Sunday Times of London reports.

Last week's killing of a 15-year-old in Scotland by an Asian gang is an example, the Times said. Although the mother of the teenager said that "justice had been done," Margaret Massey, whose teenage son also was the victim of a racially-motivated attack, thought otherwise.

Massey's son, Lee, was attacked by a group of Iraqi asylum seekers in Yorkshire in 2003 and still has not fully recovered.

"The police didn't charge 13 members of the gang even though I believe there was some evidence," she told the Times.

Massey speculated that a police inquiry into last week's case was slowed by political correctness. She suggested police were afraid of looking too eager to punish a non-white group for the killing of a white citizen. Massey said she thinks police are afraid of inflaming growing racial tensions in the area.

British authorities reportedly have seen an increase in racially motivated attacks in recent years, including fatal attacks by Asian gangs in 2001 and 2002.
