Observatory plugged on New York subways

NEW YORK, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority is directing its subway conductors to plug the new observation deck at Rockefeller Center.

A bulletin issued by the transit authority asks train crews to mention the "Top of the Rock" observatory when pulling into the Rockefeller Center Station, The New York Daily News reports.

While some riders don't notice the pitch, others think the news plugs could be a good way to generate extra money to pay for system maintenance or upgrades.

But a transportation authority spokesman says the plugs are being provided free of charge as a courtesy to riders.

The "Top of the Rock" observatory offers views 850 feet above street level at a charge of $17.50 for adults and $11.25 for children.

MTA spokesman Tom Kelly says it's not uncommon for conductors to point out major attractions such as the Museum of Natural History or Madison Square Garden.
