Swedish trade minister resigns after week

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Sweden's trade minister has resigned over allegations of tax evasion after just a week in office, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said Saturday.

Maria Borelius, 46, a former TV journalist and member of the Moderate Party, admitted to hiring nannies without paying taxes and employers' fees, the BBC reported.

She does not face any punishment since the events took place more than five years ago, outside of the statute of limitations.

She said she and her husband employ a nanny today for which they pay the appropriate taxes.

Borelius also faces allegations her wealthy family avoided property taxes on a summer house and failed to notify the authorities about share deals, the BBC said.

Other government figures have also been under fire, including culture minister Cecilia Stego Chilos, who has admitted failing to pay television license fees.
