Replacement named for ousted Shanghai pol

SHANGHAI, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Han Zheng was named acting secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, replacing sacked Chen Liangyu.

Chen was reportedly fired for his involvement in a social security fund scandal, Xinhua News Service said Monday. Chen was also suspended from the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and the CPC Central Committee.

Chen was investigated as part of a corruption case in which money was allegedly skimmed from Shanghai's social security system, Xinhua said.

According to the preliminary investigation, Chen allegedly assisted illegal business interests, helped staff members accused of violating laws and used his position to help family members, a CPC Central Committee decision said.

The CPC Central Committee said its investigation of Chen and his punishment "demonstrated the CPC's resolution to build a clean Party and to fight corruption," Xinhua said.

Han is the acting party chief of Shanghai as well as its mayor, Xinhua said.
