E. coli outbreak linked to spinach

WASHINGTON, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The Food and Drug Administration said in Washington an outbreak of E. coli linked to fresh bagged spinach has sickened 48 people and killed at least one.

Shoppers are advised to avoid all prepackaged fresh spinach.

Dr. David Acheson, director of the FDA's Food Safety and Security Staff, told the Los Angeles Times that no specific brand has been connected to the outbreak. Cases have been identified in eight states, including 20 cases in Wisconsin where the death occurred.

The other cases are in Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Oregon, New Mexico and Utah.

The Centers for Disease Control notified the FDA Wednesday of the pattern of infections.
