Conn. primary may be preview for 2008

WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- The voter polarization in last week's Connecticut Democratic primary may be a preview of the 2008 presidential election, The Washington Post says.

The Post cited sharp disagreements over the Iraq war and the policies of the Bush administration.

U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, who lost last week's primary and has now chosen to run as an independent, is campaigning for civility in politics and a return to bipartisan cooperation in Washington.

Lieberman, in running against anti-war Democrat Ned Lamont, was the target of those opposing the war, the Post said. Lieberman supports the war, but directed his campaign at a more general audience.

"People ... and not just the Democrats are angry at the direction of this country -- so am I," he told supporters Tuesday. "People are fed up with the petty partisanship and angry vitriol in Washington. Let me tell you, I have been there, and I am fed up, too."

However, Lamont's victory over Lieberman illustrates a sharp division in U. S. politics, the Post said.
