ATLANTA, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- An appeal bond has been denied for former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell on tax evasion convictions, and he will spend 30 months in federal prison.
Late Thursday, U. S. District Judge Richard Story denied the bond motion, but Campbell's attorney, Mawui Davis, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he will continue the appeal process.
Campbell, 52, was originally charged with three tax evasion counts as well as more serious racketeering charges, but was only convicted in March on the tax counts and acquitted of the others.
In June, he was given the 30-month sentence, as well as a year of probation after the sentence is served. He was also ordered to pay more than $60,000 in back taxes and a $6,000 fine, the newspaper said.
Campbell was not in court, as he was spending time with his family in Florida, his lawyer said.
