Hamas may be ready to live with neighbors

GAZA, April 5 (UPI) -- The Hamas-led Palestinian government has said Palestinians want to live "side by side" with their neighbors.

The statement is contained in a letter PA Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar wrote to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, reports the Voice of America. A U.N. spokesman was quoted as saying Annan would carefully study the letter.

The letter also said Zahar's new Palestinian government seeks a "two-state solution," and wants to work with the Mideast peace quartet made up of the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia. The two-state solution as interpreted by the quartet means Israel and a Palestinian state existing side by side in peace.

So far Hamas, which won the recent Palestinian elections, has refused to recognize Israel, disarm or accept past agreements between Israel and the Palestinians.
