PARIS, March 22 (UPI) -- A survey by a human rights group found one in three in France as saying they are at least somewhat racist, up eight percentage points from last year.
The survey of 1,011 people was done for the National Consultative Commission for Human Rights in late November 2005, immediately after the country was hit by riots, reports the BBC. The rioting was partly blamed on alleged racial discrimination against youths from immigrant families.
The survey found that only 32 percent of the respondents would notify police if they witnessed any racist behavior, compared to 50 percent last year.
The survey also found that the number of racist and anti-Semitic crimes fell in 2005.
"Despite the efforts deployed to fight racism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia, there is still a long way to go," Commission President Joel Thoraval said.
