Newark mayor running for 6th term

NEWARK, N.J., March 16 (UPI) -- New Jersey's largest city is in for a re-run of the bitter mayoral race depicted in the Oscar-nominated documentary "Street Fight."

Sharpe James, 70, is seeking a sixth term. While there are three other candidates in the non-partisan race, most observers believe it comes down to a contest between James and the man who almost defeated him in 2002, Cory Booker, a lawyer who grew up in the suburbs.

James had little to say to reporters as he filed petitions to put his name on the ballot, refusing even to describe himself as a candidate. He rode into City Hall on a bicycle, New York's Channel 2 CBS News reported, wearing a straw hat and yellow jacket.

At 37, Booker is little more than half James' age. Booker, a lawyer who grew up in a well-off suburb, lives in a Newark housing project, while James who grew up poor, lives in a mansion and drives a Rolls Royce.
