Notre Dame limits gay parade, sexual play

SOUTH BEND, Ind., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The new president of Notre Dame says the Queer Film Festival and performances of "The Vagina Monologues" raise concerns for the Roman Catholic university.

The Rev. John Jenkins stopped short of canceling next month's events, but imposed limits and said he will work with students, faculty and alumni before deciding whether they should be repeated next year.

Jenkins drew a distinction between limiting individual speech and putting boundaries on events sponsored by and held at the university.

Jenkins told the Chicago Tribune his action was not in response to alumni pressure or a Vatican mandate.

Under Jenkins' limits, the play about female sexuality and violence against women will have no ticket sales, no fundraising and be limited to a lecture hall.

Limits also include changing the 3-year-old Queer Film Festival's name to Gay & Lesbian Film: Filmmakers, Narratives, Spectatorships.

The decision has polarized students and faculty on the Roman Catholic campus, the newspaper reported.
