Black doctors face racism in Britain

LONDON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Racial equality advocates say racism is rampant in Britain's medical system.

Trevor Phillips, head of the Commission for Racial Equality, says black and Asian doctors may be the biggest single group to complain of everyday discrimination in Britain.

Although nearly two-thirds of senior doctors are from an ethnic minority, they are not being promoted to the highest level, he said.

"If I were to consider what group of people are most likely to feel that they have suffered disrespect, slights and racial disadvantage, the traditional view would be that it would be poor, black people who don't get jobs," Phillips told the Independent. "It isn't. It's doctors, senior minority doctors who are just below the level of consultant and we get shoals of complaints."
