Outburst by suspect in girl's abduction

SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- A man accused of kidnapping a 14-year-old girl so she could be his second wife was removed from a Utah courtroom after a religious outburst.

A grand jury indicted Brian David Mitchell, 51, along with co-defendant and wife, Wanda Barzee, 59, Sept. 4, 2003, on charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault and aggravated burglary.

Barzee, who filed for divorce last month, was found mentally incompetent to stand trial and has been placed in a state hospital.

Shortly after his competency hearing began, Mitchell began chanting a Bible verse about repentance before the judge told bailiffs to remove him, the Deseret Morning News reported Friday. It was the second time in as many hearings that Mitchell has been removed for inappropriate behavior.

Mitchell's scheduled Feb. 1 trial is now off as the court considers his mental competency.
