Blair blasted for ex-detainee remarks

LONDON, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Prime Minister Tony Blair says former British detainees at Guantanamo Bay have been "causing difficulties" since their release.

Blair's comments came as the five former terrorism suspects freed this year from U.S. detention were confirmed to be under round-the-clock police surveillance.

One senior official said the men are under suspicion and the activities of more than one was "worrying" police, the London Telegraph reported Sunday.

Gareth Peirce, an attorney for three of the former detainees, called on Blair to clarify what he meant, branding his remarks "highly defamatory, misleading and irresponsible."

After his talks with President Bush at the White House, Blair said no decision has been made on whether the four Britons still held at Guantanamo Bay will also be sent home.

"As you know, there have been incidents of people who have been back and causing difficulties again, so you need to be careful," Blair said.
