Basque terrorist gets 351 years in jail

MADRID, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Spain's high terrorism court has sentenced a Basque terrorist to 351 years in prison for a 1996 bombing, and ordered him to pay restitution.

Asier Ormazabal and two other men had been convicted of the bombing of an army bus in Cordoba that killed one soldier and wounded two other soldiers and two civilians.

In sentencing, the court ordered Ormazabal to pay $220,000 in restitution to the dead soldier's family, the EFE news agency reported Thursday.

The court determined that in December 1995, Ormazabal belonged to the Basque separatist group ETA's "Andalusia Command" along with the two other men already convicted.

ETA is seeking to establish an independent Basque state from parts of northern Spain and southern France, and is linked to the deaths of 850 people since it was formed in the 1960s, during the regime of Gen. Francisco Franco.
